Sonya Lindfors (Finland) - Cosmic Latte

It is the year 3023 and humanity has rid itself of constricting definitions and framed categories. In this world of beauty and glitter, there are no boundaries and anything is possible. The logic of human thought has turned 180 degrees; black and white are no longer opposites but have been fused into one tasty cocktail.

In Cosmic Latte, Finnish choreographer Sonya Lindfors wonders what a utopian future might look like. The title refers to the shade of white-beige that astronomers say is the average colour of the universe. The show hovers between performance, installation and movement landscape, building on what is known as Afro-futurism. This cultural movement, originally associated with science fiction, dreams of a place where freedom, equality, past, present and future come together.

Lindfors dreams away idiosyncratically in unsettling and sometimes deliciously ironic scenes that juxtapose hip-hop, spoken word, Afro and contemporary dance. With influences from visual art, music by Bach and Sam Cooke, West African cosmology and the ideas of Afro-futurist pioneers like free jazz musician Sun Ra, the stage colours in all shades from beige to brown.
