Robyn Orlin (South Africa) - we wear our wheels with pride and slap your streets with color

For Robyn Orlin, born in South Africa, the period of apartheid evokes strong images. For this performance she was inspired by the rickshaws in Durban, drawn by blacks to transport whites. What struck her was the dignity of these men, dressed in costumes whose beauty testified to the determination to face the humiliation. Adorned with feathers, precious stones and cow horns they jeopardized the dehumanization to which they were subjected. These toiling men "seemed to be dancing, their bodies floating in the air," according to Robyn Orlin. The choreographer now stages this fight for dignity and equality with a group of young South African dancers.
