Akram Khan Company (United Kingdom) - Bahok

After intimate duets with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Sylvie Guillem the British/Bengali choreographer Akram Khan created a piece for a larger cast: five dancers from his own kathak company and three classical dancers from the National Ballet of China.

The title, "bahok" - a Bengali word for 'carrier' - points to the different cultural backgrounds of choreographer and dancers. In the performance the dancers investigate how their bodies carry their identity, their culture, ideas and biases. "The body is an identity in itself. It has its own opionon", so Khan says.

In a departure hall on an airport eight dancers, each with their own luggage, prepare themselves for a trip home, to where the body is.

Except for a board on two steel wires and a few chairs there was no set, but a lot of lights. In 2010 the show toured The Netherlands and Belgium. In 2008 it was part of Julidans.
