Blaring light, vague menacing music, voices in your head sound as if they are coming from the mouths of gruesome clowns reciting about guilt and sorrow. They repeat every detail of the tragedy but also entice you like salsa-dancing demons to escape in denial or drugs. “A road trip to purgatory”, is how one Australian journalist described Betroffenheit by Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite and her fellow countryman, actor Jonathon Young. The production was recently crowned with a British Olivier Award, and rightly so.
