L-E-V Sharon Eyal | Gai Behar (Israel) - Into the Hairy
Their bodies are long and slender, dressed in Lycra catsuits to emphasise the ultra-defined lines of the choreography. The dancers of Israel's L-E-V Dance Company do not seem entirely human, and at the same time there is something disturbingly carnal about them. Together with her artistic partner in crime Gai Behar, Sharon Eyal turns the body into an object of indefinable desire.
The deep sensuality but also androgynous detachment in the dance is both hypnotic and magnetic: you just can't stop watching. Not least because of the compelling dance language, performed at the very highest level, which is totally contemporary. L-E-V mixes club dance with classical ballet into a swirling hybrid, not infrequently with a wink.
Propelled by an insistent bass, with their limbs following delicate high-arched shapes, the dancers are reminiscent of divine parade horses on acid. Always exciting is the sense of restrained power, a suppressed dynamic, that is menacingly present. This also makes the pieces dark and alienating.
Into the Hairy is the latest creation by Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar, in collaboration with London-based Welsh artist, producer and composer Koreless. Speaking about his work, a reviewer said: 'Like being electrocuted in the club, a club hit of a lifetime.'
