Syria Sixth Space (Syrian Arab Republic) - Kashash
In 2011, at the start of the Syrian uprising, news of the arrest of several pigeon fanciers (kashash) coincided with the realization that the Syrian airspace was no longer safe. The rooftops, which were previously occupied by kashash, now serve as vantage points for snipers. Together with different Syrian artists and researchers, Alma Salem explores the traditional Syrian practice of rooftop pigeon training, the stories behind it, and its space in a collective Syrian memory. Kashash fights for Syrian pigeons to regain the airspace and the rooftops as their personal, intimate space.
Kashash is an artistic research project, (video) installation, context program, graffiti and online campaign and, eventually, a publication.
Kashash is a continuous installation with free admission. Curator’s tours and panel discussions can be attended with a reservation.
