Meher Debbich Awachri (Tunisia) - D-Sisyphe
Writer, actor, and dancer Meher Debbich Awachri (1984) made the internationally successful piece D-Sisyphe, inspired by the myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus.
In this adaptation, the character of Sisyphus is the Tunisian construction worker Khmais, who is not happy with his life. In the course of the years, his family has become a burden to him, society rejected him, and God seems to have abandoned him.
Khmais sees the wreckage of his life. He seems to have lost his faith, and even though this painful realization frightens him, it also gives him strength.
The performance offers a fascinating insight into a modern Arab society and its problems. With a very physical theatrical approach, Awachri created a provoking yet subtle production.
