Ligia Lewis (Germany) - minor matter
In minor matter, choreographer and dancer Ligia Lewis asks the audience to view the world through the eyes of a universal minority, black people, and to not only see their fieriness and anger. “If I look at the history of dance from a Western perspective, then we don’t have anything to look back on because we were written out of history. So how can I create something out of nothing?” On the dance floor, Lewis does what is so difficult to do on a large scale at a small-scale, physical and ethical level: three black dancers mark the space with their tracks and presents themselves from their most versatile side. Their bodies speak of anger and despair but also of love, hope and joy. To a sound score that moves from the past (classical, baroque) to the present (avant-garde, contemporary), the three dancers rewrite history.
