Yang Liping Contemporary Dance (China) - Under Siege
'Under Siege' by Yang Liping is a remake of the classic Beijing Opera Farewell My Concubine. It tells, strongly styled, the story of the final battle between two warlords, Xiang Yu and Liu Bang. In his hopeless situation, surrounded by Liu's armies, Xiang has a final encounter with his favorite concubine, who brings the ultimate love offer: she wants to die with her master and commits suicide. This new enscenary is as epic and multidisciplinary as the Beijing Opera, with music, dance and acrobatics, with slow, distracted scenes and - one of the strengths of this production - a grand, exuberant design. Tim Yip (known for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and designer of, among others, Akram Khan and Robert Wilson) designed a stunning, plant-like decor of hundreds of cam-hanging scissors, reflecting the light and moving the armor's armor's clutch From Xiang and Liu. Unmistakably contemporary is the hybrid movement language. Yang is experimenting for the first time with the mixing of martial arts and traditional Chinese dance shapes with hip hop and other Western styles.
