José Navas/Compagnie Flak (Canada)

Compagnie Flak is one of Canada's most respected modern dance companies and has visited The Netherlands on a regular basis. Artistic Director José Navas was initially known for his solo pieces, where he showed dance as pure as possible. He used to compare them to a capella singing. Navas' group pieces have the same pure logic, sometimes reminding of his teacher Merce Cunningham. He constructs his pieces like an architect. Dancers move with almost mathematical precision, changing from very fast to serene movements. In 2008 Navas and his company presented the choreography 'S', on music by Erik Satie. For 'Diptych' he chose various preludes an fugues from 'Das Wohltemperierte Klavier' and parts from the 'Cello Suites' by Johann Sebastian Bach.
