Compañía Belén Maya (Spain)
Belén Maya is the daughter of two great gypsy flamenco artists: Mario Maya, dancer and choreographer and dancer Carmen Mora. She was born in New York during a tour of America by her parents and grew up in Madrid. She began her dance training at the age of 18 at the Madrid dance studios "Amor de Dios" in Manolete, La Tati, Guito, Carmen Cortés and many others.
She is not only trained in flamenco dance, but also in classical ballet. She joined the training program of the Spanish National Ballet ("La Escuela del Ballet Nacional"). After a year, however, she decided to move to Seville to focus on flamenco. She learned a soleá and taranto and acted in the Tablao "Los Gallos".
She then joined the company of her father, Mario Maya, and within three years she was promoted from a member of the Corps de Ballet to first dancer and rehearsal director. She performed with Rafaela Carrasco and Israel Galván. Meanwhile, she also gained experience in Seville tablaos "Los Gallos" and "El Patio".
After some time she left the company of her father and started her own company. In 1997 she was invited by her future life partner Mayte Martín for the Grec Festival in Barcelona. This meeting led to the creation of a new company of her with Mayte.
She is always looking for innovation, from her background in classical but especially in modern dance. She loves the singing of Mayte Martín and finds Mayte's vocals fit perfectly with her dance. She also loves the voice of Estrella Morente; she just does not see herself dancing to it. She is very good at dancing with bata de cola; she has put a lot of effort into learning this technique. Cooperation with other dancers is something she always enjoys.
